Coming up with solutions.

We are very creative, and have thought up lot's of solutions.

Our solutions are:

1. Have a Kauriland's school bus that picks up and drops off children.

2. Give parents tickets for breaking the rules at  the two minute drop off zone.

3. Get more children using the walking school bus.

4. Give parents who use the drop off zone correctly  a raffle ticket  for a weekly draw.

5. Make an information video for parents to remind them, how to use the drop off zone safely and correctly.

6. Get Auckland council to make more parking spaces near school.

7. Get school to make their carpark bigger.

8. Provide information about the two minute drop off zone through the school newsletter and blog.

9. Make a children's sign for the two minute drop off zone.

Can we use all the solutions?

What kind of things would we need to consider, so that we are picking the best solutions?

Your goals this week

We are getting closer to the really fun part of our project which is to start coming up with solutions.

Your goals for this week are to read the 2 blog postings below about today's meeting and then answer the following questions.

1. What kind of mistakes was there in the survey information?

2. What were Marisha's next 2 steps when she had put in the information about ruma 8 into her excel spreadsheet?

3. There was a lot of feedback from you about your solutions which is great. What are some of your solutions?

4. Can we decide on a solution before we know what all the information tells us?

REMEMBER ALL YOUR ANSWERS NEED TO BE IN COMPLETE SENTENCES and stay cool till after school :)

Information overload!

What the information is telling us about ruma 8

  • ABOUT HALF OF THE STUDENTS FROM RUMA 8 LIVE WITHIN A 5 MINUTE WALKING DISTANCE TO THE SCHOOL.
  • MOST OF THE STUDENTS THAT LIVE WITHIN THE WALKING ZONE WALK TO SCHOOL.
  • ONLY A FEW STUDENTS THAT LIVE WITHIN THE WALKING ZONE COME BY CAR.
  • MOST STUDENTS THAT WALK TO SCHOOL DO NOT USE THE WALKING SCHOOL BUS.

Marisha found out the following information by putting  the survey information of ruma 8 into her excel spreadsheet. The first step she took was -

1. Information was inserted into the speadsheet using the headings of address, suburb, car/walk/cycle, consider using the walking school bus and the distance of the address from school.

What were Marisha's next 2 steps? (Clue: Take another look at the information that was found out about ruma 8).

What the information about ruma 8 could look like on our big map of the school and the surrounding streets.

Studying the information we have collected

Marisha explaining how to turn the survey information into information that will be able to help us.
The story so far.......

We have collected survey information from 9 senior classes. We have asked 219 children how they have travelled to school. We will not be able to use all the information as it is incomplete and contains mistakes. Engineers always do the best they can with the information they are able to use.

Engineers love using excel spreadsheets to make sense of information.
