Pricing for the signs

Mrs Robinson has heard back from Digital factory who make signs for Kaurilands school.

A pavement sign  of our sign will cost $226.00 plus tax

A plastic banner of our sign that would be fixed to the school fence would cost $285.00 plus tax

What do you think our next step would be now that we have these prices?

Our entry for the Engineering award is now due, however our project continues. Have a great break over the holidays. Kia kaha

Reflecting on the solutions we chose

We came up with the headings, time, cost, who would do the job and space and then brainstormed the implications of each on each of our initial solutions. We had already done this in June, but we were only able to think of heading which was cost.

Reflecting on the solutions we chose

We chose number 5 because it did not cost any money and we were the ones who made the video. we chose number 8 because we had the information and we did not have to rely on other people to do it for us. We also chose number 9 as it was a really good one cause we got to design our very own sign.
Nothing so far has cost money to get our solution's but the school will also be supporting us when we need to make the sign.

Reflecting on the solutions we chose

The sign is better than having a bus because a bus costs a lot of money but a sign does not cost as much as a bus and you get to design a sign of your own.

Reflecting on the solutions we chose

We chose numbers 5,8 and 9 because they didn't cost too much money and they were not too time consuming.

The other ones needed more money, people and time.

Reflecting on our solutions by Deanna

The reason we chose number five was because it didn't cost any money, we made the video and all it did cost was our time. Number eight was chosen because again it didn't cost anything but time. Number nine was also chosen because it was simple and it also was a really good idea.

Reflecting on the solutions we chose

Using the information we found out from the travel survey we thought the following solutions could work.

1. Have a Kauriland's school bus that picks up and drops off children.

2. Give parents tickets for breaking the rules at  the two minute drop off zone.

3. Get more children using the walking school bus.

4. Give parents who use the drop off zone correctly  a raffle ticket  for a weekly draw.

5. Make an information video for parents to remind them, how to use the drop off zone safely and correctly.

6. Get Auckland council to make more parking spaces near school.

7. Get school to make their carpark bigger.

8. Provide information about the two minute drop off zone through the school newsletter and blog.

9. Make a children's sign for the two minute drop off zone.

WHY DID WE ONLY CONSIDER number 5, 8 and 9 as our solutions?

Final Sign designs

How are these signs an IMPROVEMENT on the first signs you made?

Our meeting with Meera from Auckland council

Today we met with Meera who works for Auckland Transport. We explained to Meera how we came up with the problem that we had been looking into.

Meera gave us some very interesting information about two minute drop off signs on how they do not work.
The interesting bit is that there are lots of two minute drop off signs in West Auckland, but very few or even none of these signs in other parts of Auckland. Our school is in West Auckland.

We showed Meera our two final designs and talked about our ideas on where we would like to see them displayed.

Tuesday 20 September 2011

I think that adults are seeing the sign but just are not bothering to follow the rules and just being lazy. And just thinking all about themself.

Monday 19 September 2011

Drop off signs at a school nearby.

James spotted the drop off signs at a school very near Kaurilands. These pictures were taken yesterday at 2.25pm. There are 5 drop off signs altogether. The interesting thing was that there were lots of cars already parked at the drop off zone even though the school has all these signs. WHAT IS GOING ON??

DO YOU THINK THE SIGNS ARE BEING UNDERSTOOD BY DRIVERS OR ARE THEY BEING IGNORED?

HOW DO YOU THINK OUR SIGN THAT YOU WILL HAVE DESIGNED WILL BE DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES BELOW?

The chosen one!

Thank you Whaea Jackie for coming to speak to the children today. Whaea Jackie enjoyed looking at all the designs put forward by the group. We will be using the feedback of being careful with the kind of symbols that were used in some of the signs. For example the red stop sign used in one of the designs sends a confusing message. Do we really want cars to stop at the two minute drop off zone? We have also noted that Whaea Jackie likes borders!

Our task now is to edit the sign that Whaea Jackie has chosen, and make some improvements! This sign has now been emailed to everyone.

"I like this one, as the message is clear".

Marisha also talked about NZ road signs. What were the four kinds of signs that she spoke about?

"We need to be careful about the kind of symbols we use on our signs".
Marisha went on to explain, that we should not use road safety symbols in our signs that are currently used in other signs as this would just confuse drivers. She also spoke to us about the size of the letters and how we should try to use as little writing as possible. WHY IS THIS?

The slogan - and we have a great slogan "DROP OFF AND GO" needs to be really clear in our sign, as the reason for our sign is to reinforce the Auckland council two minute drop off sign.

Using all the feedback, the following are examples of how our signs could look.

YOUR GOAL THIS WEEK IS TO READ THIS BLOG POST CAREFULLY AND EDIT THE SIGN THAT HAS BEEN EMAILED TO YOU.

ALSO, PLEASE ANSWER THE TWO QUESTIONS IN THIS BLOG POST. THIS WILL HELP YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE LEARNING THAT TOOK PLACE TODAY.

Two Minute Drop Off Zone Sign

Hi Guys,

Great work on the signs. I received them all last week and I've been having a good look through them to see how they can be improved. On Wednesday, when we meet, I'll give each of you some feedback on your individual sign designs.

In general, I like how each of you are emphasising the two minute rule and reminding parents that it is a drop off zone and not a parking zone. However, some of the signs might have a little too much information on it and so the message that we are trying to give to parents can get lost in all the text on the sign.

Remember, how we spoke about keeping it simple!!

Another thing to remember when finalising our sign design is that we need to respect the current traffic and road rules. This means that in NZ we have specific shapes, colours and symbols on signs that give drivers specific messages. For example, a red octagonal with the words STOP on it is usually found at an intersection and this sign means that a driver has to come to a complete stop before driving through the intersection. If we put a sign similar to this at our drop off zone, it would probably confuse drivers. We'll discuss this more on Wednesday and I'll give you a few more examples to explain.

I googled some examples of drop off zone signs that are being used in other countries and these are included below:

Finally, you all put a lot of effort into picking a really cool slogan to emphasise the importance of using the drop off zone correctly. I'd like to see this slogan on our sign! Wouldn't you??

I did a quick example of a sign for you - tell me what you think about it...

Meeting Whaea Jackie

Yvette and I went to see Whaea Jackie about the two minute Drop off zone, and that we should have a person on patrol for it. Whaea Jackie explained that there is going to be a teacher near the two minute drop off zone in the morning and afternoon for two weeks, to patrol this area. If some parents still do nott get the message we will have to do something else.

Thursday 1 September 2011

times

What is the times in the morning for the drop off zone and the after school times.

Thinking about how to survey the senior school on choosing the best slogan

planning

We decided to do a tally chart for each senior class

Goal this week

Whaea Jackie will choose the sign that gives the most effective message. If you are adding final touches, please make sure these are emailed to me by next Tuesday so I can print them in colour for you. You have now all received feedback on how your signs could be improved. Whaea Jackie will only be able to choose from the work that she can see.

Sufia and Deanna have you spoken to Whaea Jackie yet about the groups idea of an additional child out on patrol to supervise the two minute drop off zone? Feedback please.

Have a great week and Happy Fathers day on Sunday - I am sure you won't forget :)

Information video on the two minute drop off zone

Check out our information video, that was presented to the senior school at assembly last week.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQh3kfzwyjE

Waiting to present to the Kauri syndicate.

Sign designs so far ......

Engineers need to keep deadlines, otherwise they are costing other people involved in the Engineering process time and money. Our goal from last week was to have our signs ready. It is really important to keep to our timeline otherwise we will run out of time to submit our entry.

After a little bit of editing that is needed, we will be asking Whaea Jackie to choose the sign which sends the most effective message.

USE THE PMI (positive, minus, Interesting) strategy on each of the signs above to make a comment on what you think about each of the signs.

WHICH SIGN IF ANY, DO YOU THINK GIVES THE MOST EFFECTIVE MESSAGE?

Meeting Constable Carl

Constable Carl sharing his expertise with the group.

Listening attentively to advice!
Constable Carl mentioned how it was really important to remind parents about the safety of their children around cars on a consistent basis.

This gave the team some good ideas on other things that they could do to encourage positive behaviours in addition to the sign that we are hoping to have made for school.

Ideas so far .....

1. In addition to the teacher and two children on road patrol, we could have an additional child on patrol at the two minute drop off zone.

2. A reminder in the means of a small paper version of our sign, could be placed under the wiper blades of individual cars who continue to park at the two minute drop off zone.

3. Have the sign that we finally create printed onto the back of the road patrol jackets.

WHAT OTHER IDEAS DO YOU HAVE?

WHAT DO WE NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN COMING UP WITH OTHER SOLUTIONS?

HOW DO WE  DECIDE WHICH ONES TO CHOOSE?

PLEASE POST YOUR COMMENTS.

School Vote

Hi guys,

How did your meeting with Constable Karl go today? Did he give you some feedback on your signs??

I hear you're having to have to redo the vote for the school slogan. Why do you think it is important to do the vote again?

Tuesday 23 August 2011

What is the difference between a poster and a sign

The difference between a poster and a sign is that a poster can have a picture and title. But a sign only has a title and no picture.A poster has lots of colours like red, green, orange and a sign only has about two colours like white and blue and you cant really say please on a P2 sign because people won't listen.

By James.

Wednesday 17 August 2011

Goal this week

To CREATE your sign on a word document, and make the changes we talked about when looking at each of your draft signs.

You need to have these ready for Wednesday to show PC Carl will be coming in to speak with us.

The Slogan from the senior school voting had STOP, DROP AND GO as the most popular slogan, however because we missed the GET OUT, GET IN slogan we will need to redo the voting sometime this week.

If you do not have a printer, email me your work before Wednesday and I will get these printed in colour for you.

Tuesday 16 August 2011

The difference between a poster and a sign.

Posters are made by you drawing them on a piece of paper, they have lots of colours, pictures and lots of writing.

Signs are made on the computer, are very simple, are BOLD and they also have only 3 or 4 colours.

A sign and a poster

The difference between a sign and a poster is a sign tells you something clearly and a poster has lots of detail. A poster usally has pictures that are colourful and a sign usally has black and white pictures. A sign is simple.

Presentation to Senior school

He whetu koutou  You are all stars!) The presentation was fantastic, and what a huge round of applause you received. I am sure you received lots of encouraging feedback from your teachers and classmates. I have recorded you on video, however I am having trouble uploading this to the blog. I will continue to persevere!

Remember to post your comments to questions, as we are also collecting evidence on how our learning is developing.

Presentation at Friday's Assembly

Hi Guys,

Fantastic effort in creating your video. It was wonderful to see each of you have a part in it. You should be very proud of all the hard work you're doing. I know the school is going to love it when you present this Friday at the assembly. If you're feeling nervous that's okay. Just remember to go over your lines as practicing will make a big difference.

It was also great having the discussion at lunch today about the positives, negatives and interesting parts of the video. Keep those in mind for the next video you make.

Good luck with the design of your signs. Remember how we spoke about keeping it SIMPLE so that it is easy to understand. I look forward to seeing your designs when they are ready!

What is the difference between a poster and a sign

A few of you have made some great posters for the drop off zone.

The two images below are examples of how a sign can look.

COMPARE the poster and the signs. HOW are they different?

Anwser's for Marisha

1.I am not so sure if we are going to get the rest of the school involved, we haven't talked about it lately.

2.The video is going well.  All we have to do now is put it all together.

What we found out

What we have found out from our travel habits survey.
Most children that live within walking distance to school are walking.
There are a large number of children that live quite far away and have to travel to school by car.
This means that we need to encourage parents to use the two minute drop off zone correctly and encourage them to change their behavior on how close they park near school, before school and straight after school.

Designing your drop off sign

We are very lucky that school will be supporting the Engineering group in creating a sign for the two minute drop off zone. We are waiting back from Constable Carl who has also taken an interest in our project.

In the meantime, YOUR GOAL THIS WEEK is to come up with your designs of what our sign could look like.

Your tips are:
Think about the 'catchy slogan' you would like to use
Think about the colours for you sign (What colours are used in other road signs?).

REMEMBER WE WILL NOW MEET ON WEDNESDAY LUNCHTIMES.

Slogans

Hi Guys,

Welcome back from your break. Hope you are all feeling relaxed and recharged and ready to get back into finishing off our engineering project. You all have some great ideas on the slogans for the two minute drop off zone. Are you still going to get the rest of the school involved by having a survey?? I think it's a great idea.

How's the video coming along? What did you all do during your catch up today with Ara today?

Cheers,
Marisha

Goal this week

1. Complete your storyboard so we can pick the best ideas for our information video.

2. Come up with a slogan for our two minute drop off zone. Yvette suggested 'In and out'. Marisha found 'hug amd go and hug, kiss and go' from the internet. Do you have another one?

3. Complete your diagram of how the two minute drop off zone. How can this be improved? (This was lasts weeks goal which 3 of you completed)

James video blog

My first post - The two minute drop off zone.

I am on the blog!

The good points are that they do have certain rules and if they didn't have rules then some people will be affected.

The bad point is that parents can't follow rules.

The interesting fact is that parents are acting like kids.

Yes it could be improved by having a bigger sign but not too high up.

my first post

The good point is that the drop off zone is clear.

The negative point is that the drop off zone is too small and it is not clear in the morning and afternoon.

The interesting point is that the sign is too small.

My first video post

This is me!

I think that the Kaurilands school P2 sign is to small and that it is too high.
It would be better if it was like the Titirangi school P2 sign.

Creating a storyboard for our information video

This is a goal for Kern and Callum this week.

Making a storyboard is really important when we are thinking about making a video.

We are going to make a video as a way to share information with the community about

  • Encouraging the correct use of the two minute drop off zone
  • Encouraging parents to park near the school so they can walk their children into school.
  • Highlight the advantages of the walking school bus
HOW TO CREATE A STORY BOARD

Step 1
Write a narrative (story) of what your video will be about.

Step 2
Break up your narrative into 8 to 10 key (important) scenes.

Step 3
Pencil in your scenes to your storyboard.

Step 4
Look at your storyboard. Have you missed any important scenes out? If so, add these in.

POST YOUR NARRATIVE (STORY) of the information video that you would like to see made.
Have a look at all the ideas we brainstormed together. You could also take a picture of your storyboard and post this ...

Have a great week.

blog post NO.1

Hi my name is callum, and this is my second time writing a blog post I have write a letter in the school news letter. If you want to see my letter then go on the website at www.kaurilands school.co.nz

1.The good points are: that it is a good amount of space to park in and is very convenient.
the bad points are: people use it as an hour or less, or even more which makes the queue even worse.
The interesting part is that people don't re
ally care if they make traffic all they care is if they get a park and go.

2. We could make the two minute drop off zone Sign bigger and thus more obvious or
even a Sandwich board to inform the people that it is a two minute drop zone zone

Friday 24 June 2011

The 2 min drop off zone

The good points are:there is a big place to park but it will create a bigger queue and that will waste time. The 2 minute parking zone is near the school so you don't need to cross the road.

The not so good points is that the drop off sign is too small. You could easily miss it.

The interesting point is we need to add to colour to the markings on the road and make the drop off sign more obvious to see.

Thursday 23 June 2011

2 minute drop off zone.

1.One good point is that it tell's you that is a 2 minute parking area.
One bad point is that most people might no park there because it is in the way of the gates.
One interesting point is that they are to small.
Also they could have a bigger sign.
2. We could make a bigger sign and bigger lines and we should make it go futher.

Tuesday 21 June 2011

Your goal this week

One of the goals of our project is to encourage the correct use of the two minute drop off zone.

At the moment the two minute drop of zone on Atkinson road looks like this,

The two minute drop off zone
 The tiny sign
This is what the road markings below the sign look like.

1.What are the Good points/ negative points/ Interesting points of what drop off zone LOOKS like at the moment? DEANNA, SUFIA, CALLUM and KERN you should now be able to make your own blog post to answer this.

2. LOOK AT THE NEGATIVE POINTS you have recorded. Could the drop off Zone be improved in any way?

3. MAKE A DRAWING of how you think the two minute drop off zone could be improved and bring it to our next meeting on Monday.
